Brigadier Gerard is the hero of a series of comic novels of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The hero, Gerard Etienne, is a Hussar in the French army during the Napoleonic wars. Gerard the most remarkable feature: the vanity - he is totally convinced that this is the brave soldier, the greatest swordsman, accomplished horseman and gallant lover across France. Gerard is not entirely wrong, since displays remarkable bravery many times, but self-satisfaction undermines this very often. Persistence with honour and glory, always ready with a stirring speech or remark to a gallant lady.
Conan Doyle, to the formation of a forlorn hero, and often rather uncomprehending Frenchman was able to satirise both the English stereotypical view of the French, and - during their presentation by Gerard incomprehensible terms - Greek manners and customs.
